Last weekend was so much fun we thought we might do a quick ‘hit and run’ walk up Hallin Fell. So we did.

We parked the car by Martindale Church, the Car Park in Howtown not operating. It feels rather fraudulent though as the church is at least half way up what is not a very high fell really.

It was believed that we had forgotton to bring the camera with us, so there is no photograpic evidence of the climb, but here is a picture of Hallin Fell taken the week before from the Howtown Hotel.

Place Fell

The next day we decided to take on Place Fell, it’s way higher than Loughrigg and a longer walk, so a bit more effort was required!

We parked the car in Patterdale, a small hamlet with a hotel which has a carpark. The route we took was pretty steep up, and then a more relaxed stroll down to Howtown. There is a geochache very close to the summit, which we collected on the way up.

When we got there, we ate our packed lunch at the top of the fell, in the wind, but failed to take any pictures of the scenery (Doh!, we will get better at that I promise!).

The we made our way down round the edge of the lake and into Howtown. Howtown is another hamlet with a hotel, and we made use of the tea facilities at the Howtown Hotel. Proper tea in a pot with tea leaves and boiling hot water.

And we couldn’t resist the scones!

As if that wasn’t enough excitement, we then caught the boat back from Howtown Pier to Glenridding, a short walk from Patterdale and the car. What a fantastic day!

Loughrigg Fell

So, we arrived in Ambleside on Thursday lunchtime, met up with Ross and Sally, settled in to the B&B and, at Ross’s suggestion headed straight for Loughrigg Fell.

The walk up from Ambleside was a little steeper than I would have preferred in places, but it was pretty gentle really. We made it to the top which felt good! It was a bit drizzly on the way up, better on the way down.

It started with a visit to the lake district

A couple of our good friends came to visit us in November. They’d done some fell walking and asked us if we’d like to spend a few days in the Lakes with them, which we duly did at the end of April.

We satyed in Ambleside, which is a nice town on the north end of Windermere. Over the weekend we discovered the Wainwright books and fantastic glory of the lakeland fells. We had visited the Lake district before, but we were put off by the foot and mouth (it was 2001), but we have to say that we fell in love with the place.

The king of lakeland fellwalking was Alfred Wainwright who wrote seven great books on the subject. His seven books identify 214 peaks, and we’ve decided to make our way up all of them. This blog will mark our progress which means, by very nature, it will be quiet for weeks on end and then very busy. Hopefully it will be interesting!
